IMPROVEMENT

As part of a scheme to improve traffic flow, Markeaton Island is to benefit from a £500,000 project to improve capacity for A38 traffic by widening the approaches and exits at the roundabout. After the work is completed, one extra lane will be available for through traffic in both directions. Street lighting and pedestrian crossings will also be upgraded and the northern crossing will become a toucan, allowing both pedestrians and cyclists to use it - as they do now.

Adrian Slack, Highways Agency route manager, said, "To make the best use of the existing road, we'll be widening the roundabout approaches and exits within the existing highway boundary. At present, only two lanes are available for A38 through traffic in both directions. Once the scheme is completed, through traffic will also be able to use the current right-turn-only lane, enabling it to clear the roundabout more quickly. To minimise disruption to the travelling public, the majority of traffic management will be in place overnight. However, we do apologise for any inconvenience that the scheme might cause." Might cause?
