STREET PARKING CHARGES COULD
RISE
Charges for on-street parking in Derby
look set to rise by 10p as the council reviews
its pricing. The authority has put together a
series of proposed changes to charges for parking
and its neighbourhood services.
Paul Robinson, strategic director for
neighbourhoods, said parking charges were driven
by a need to keep traffic in the city flowing,
rather than to make money. The proposed charges
will be put before the council's cabinet on
Tuesday to be agreed.
If the recommendations are approved, there would
be increases to on-street parking charges and the
Royal Derby Hospital area of about 10p. The exact
increase will depend on the area.
Within the outer area of the city, a half-hour
parking charge of £1 will be deleted. Meanwhile
the proposals are to freeze car parking charges
or eliminate some tariffs in car parks.
Mr Robinson said, "The council doesn't use
parking to drive income, charges are driven by
the need to make the city flow so it is
approached from a highways perspective."
At the Assembly Rooms, there will be no increase
in the rates and the £1.80 charge for one hour
will be removed. In addition, the £3.70 charge
for staying three hours will be removed and it
will cost £3, the same as for two hours.
Councillor Philip Hickson, council leader, said,
"If we didn't have charges the city would be
one giant car park and that would be no good for
traders. We have got to make sure people can pop
in and out of the city centre." (Source:
