COUNCIL
SCRAPS CONGESTION CHARGING PLAN
Labour has scrapped two of
its most controversial policies, congestion
charging and a parking meters scheme, after
suffering local election losses. Chris
Williamson, Labour group leader, said the
decision to shelve congestion charging proposals
and parking meters at Littleover was made on the
back of the way residents cast their votes.
Planning and highways cabinet member Ranjit
Banwait revealed that he had told officers on the
day after the election to put on hold his plans
to introduce parking charges in Littleover.... more

HIPPODROME DEMOLITION
REQUEST REJECTED
Christopher Anthony's
listed building application to demolish the
Hippodrome has been rejected by the Conservation
Area Advisory Committee, one of the groups
consulted. Its chairman, Maxwell Craven, said the
group had flatly rejected the application. He
said, "We sweepingly condemned any attempt
to demolish the building." The application,
with the advisory committee's recommendation, is
likely to go before the council's planning
committee at the end of this month or early

BUILDING
WORK ON BUS STATION HAS STARTED
Building work has finally started on
the new bus station but bus operators said they
were still in talks with the city council and
developers Riverlights Ltd about how it will
operate. Riverlights Ltd said the bus station
would be the first part to be completed at the
end of 2009 or beginning of 2010, with the rest
of phase one due for completion by the middle of
2010. The first phase will comprise the station,
two hotels, a casino, restaurants and bars and a
later phase will add apartment blocks. Work on
the apartments will start after that.... more

SHOPPERS TO BE
REIMBURSED FOR PARKING
Shopkeepers in the
Cathedral Quarter are hoping to attract more
custom by offering to pay for parking in their
area. About 50 stores in have signed up to the
scheme where anyone spending at least £25 will
have their parking ticket reimbursed. The scheme
works by machines giving out a special ticket.
Shoppers leave half the ticket on display in the
car and take the other half with them. If they
then spend over £25 or £50, depending on the
shop, their parking charge is returned.... more

CALL
FOR RISE IN TAXI FARES
Unions representing cab drivers in
the city want to raise the cost of hailing a cab
by 33%. Derby Area Taxi Operators' Association
and Derby Hackney Union, want to put up prices to
reflect increases in their overheads,
particularly the rising cost of fuel. They are
proposing to increase the cost of hailing a cab
in the day from £1.50 to £2 and to raise the
cost of each mile after that from £1.40 to
£1.50. At night time, they want the cost of
hailing a cab to rise from £2 to £2.30 and the
rate per mile to rise from £1.50 to £1.60.... more

NEW
VENUE TO OPEN IN CITY CENTRE
A new entertainment venue is about
to open in the city centre, The Royal, on
Victoria Street. The Grade-II listed former Royal
Banqueting Suite was taken over by Nottingham
company Delicious three months ago. The venue is
split into two rooms and will feature live music,
club nights and comedy. The Red Room, the smaller
of the two, will play host to live performances
from smaller bands and local talent and the
larger blue room will feature bigger acts and the
main club nights on Friday and Saturday.... more

CITY
COUNCILLOR EVICTED FROM HER HOME
City councillor Wendy
Harbon has moved to Blackpool after being evicted
from her Derby home for failing to pay her rent.
However, she has refused to resign her seat on
Derby City Council and is still claiming the
£9,380 annual allowance she gets for
representing Darley ward. Miss Harbon has not
attended any council meetings since September. If
she does not attend any before July, she will be
automatically kicked off the council. Her
landlord, Chris Rodgers, said he had no choice
but to evict her from his property in Kedleston
Road as she was 20 weeks in arrears and owed him
about £1,300.... more

CAMPAIGN
TO KEEP CARE HOME OPEN
Residents at Bramble Brook
House in Mickleover, that has been earmarked for
closure are taking their campaign to keep it open
to the High Court. Derby City Council has said
the decision to close care home was due to a bed
surplus in residential homes. Solicitors acting
on behalf of all of the residents have issued
proceedings for a judicial review and will argue
that the consultation process was not valid.
Solicitor Simon Richardson said the Legal
Services Commission has granted legal aid to pay
for the proceedings.... more
