MAURICE BURGESS
Lib Dem group leader Maurice Burgess declared himself "out of action" and handed his duties over to his deputy, Mickleover ward councillor Hilary Jones. Mr Burgess estimated he would be taking a back seat for "about a fortnight". Neither Ms Jones nor the party's former deputy leader Lucy Care would reveal the reason for Mr Burgess's absence. RON LIVERSEDGE
Ron Liversedge was banned from driving for 20 months after he failed a police breath test. He was also given a £500 fine and ordered to pay costs of £69 by Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court. Mr Liversedge was stopped by police who said they could smell alcohol on his breath and he was unsteady on his feet. He failed a breath test on the spot and was taken to St Mary's Wharf police station where the extent of his alcohol consumption was revealed by further tests.

Cllr Liversedge pleaded guilty to the charge and submitted a letter in mitigation to the magistrates. He also told the magistrates that his earnings could be affected by a driving ban saying, "There is a possibility that I would lose my main employment and that would affect my earnings." He was told that his ban would be reduced to 15 months if he successfully completed a drink-drivers' rehabilitation course....

CHRIS WYNN
After serving for seven years on Derby City Council, former Labour cabinet member Chris Wynn lost his seat in the 2007 local elections. Mr Wynn stood in the safe Conservative ward of Spondon after giving up his seat in Alvaston to allow fellow party member Paul Bayliss to stand. Mr Wynn said he was delighted to see his friend re-take the position he lost last year and he was also "quite happy" with his own result, despite missing out to Conservative candidate Peter Berry by more than 1,400 votes.

He said, "I'm so pleased for Paul and to win by a majority of nearly 400 votes is a fantastic result. He's Alvaston to the core and as the only local candidate he was the best option. He is also a fantastic councillor and will do an excellent job in the ward. I was quite happy with the result in the Spondon ward. Spondon is a ward that Labour, as a party, haven't perhaps done enough in in the past and party supporters were really happy to the see the work we were putting in."....

HARDIAL SINGH DHAMRAIT
Hardial Singh Dhamrait, a Labour member for the Sinfin ward, was investigated for allegedly trying to influence a council decision in which he had a personal interest. It followed an investigation by the Standards Board for England into allegations by a member of the public that Mr Dhamrait had failed to declare an interest and "sought improperly to influence a decision on the matter". The inquiry was conducted by an ethical standards officer from the Standards Board, the body that investigates allegations of unethical conduct in local government. The officer referred his evidence to the city council's standards committee, which will decide whether there has been a breach of the authority's Code of Conduct....
