Airport HolidayMillions of Brits are planning to spend their holidays at UK airports this summer, say travel agents. Tracey Jones of Heathrow Holidays Ltd said, "People are already booking to spend their holidays at Heathrow and other major UK airports.

People are being realistic and know a UK holiday is best and the airport is as far as you are going to go anyway." Bill Jackson, who has just booked a family holiday with Getaway to Gatwick Holidays, said he was looking forward to another airport holiday.

He said, "Last year we did a super Luton Leisure weekend. We find it better than flying somewhere because you don’t have to worry about the weather or being blown out of the skies but you still get that nearly had a holiday feeling. Soon as you arrive at the airport you’re made to feel welcome. A pretty lady welcomes you with a nice body search, they take your shoes off, and you can get undressed if you make a fuss. This year they’re offering whole body scanners which will be just like standing up sun beds."

He added, "The kids really enjoy all the excitement about the threat of terrorism and love telling the lady that they helped pack their own suitcases. They say sleeping on the floor is just like camping without the rain." Ms Jones said that Heathrow Holidays had pioneered the airport holiday concept and offered the best value for money.

She said, "Our Long Delay holidays are the most popular because there’s no restriction on how long they can last. People booking with us know they’ve got the backing of BA and the Unite union in case anything goes wrong and they have the nuisance of having to fly somewhere foreign to spend two horrible weeks on a beach in the sun." A travel company has bucked the trend of lower bookings by introducing ‘proxy holidays’ which remove the need to go away at all. Grant Sanders, head of Stevenage-based ProxyHolidays, said he had the idea on a recent trip to Paris. He said, "I was queuing to see the Mona Lisa in the Louvre, and I couldn’t help noticing how bored everyone looked. When they finally reached the front, they held up their mobiles to get a picture and then moved on to photograph something else without even having a proper look." With his contacts, Grant was able to recruit an army of tour reps who could hold up a mobile anywhere in the world to photograph buildings, scenery, statues, restaurants and airport lounges.

A big advantage is being able to mix destinations, perhaps switching to Las Vegas when bored with Pompeii, without the inconvenience of a long flight in between. He said, "Our service is totally flexible: you can send us a mobile of your own or you can rent one through us. You can even upgrade to the latest model at very reasonable rates. Many people just leave us to get on with their holiday while they enjoy themselves at home, but some do like to get more involved, and for them we have an interactive wall where they can hold up their mobiles up and receive pictures direct from the reps."

While the service was initially aimed at sightseeing breaks, the company has experienced considerable demand for a beach holiday alternative, and now issues a free bag of sand to scatter around the bedroom floor and inside clothes for an authentic experience. The company says the great thing about proxy holidays is the lack of arguments and not feeling exhausted by the travel. Grant added, "You just spend your time getting pissed and eating takeaways, and you can get away from annoying mates or family members whenever you need to. And to complete the service, we can Photoshop all the pictures you take of each other into the ones we have taken for you." (Source:
