QUAD CENTRE NOW OPEN
QuadThe new £11m Quad centre for art and film has opened in the Market Place. Street processions with giant puppets made by local children were held to mark the opening. Quad manager Keith Jeffery said, "We want to be ambitious and to have an international impact, but we also want to create work that reflects local people and what inspires them. We want to make the centre accessible to everyone as it is not an elitist or ivory-tower place." The centre also has a film editing suite and a digital lab.... more >>>
RECYCLING BIN SITES TO BE REMOVED
Bottle BankRecycling bin sites in car parks and on sides of streets in Derby will start to be removed by the city council. The authority says the move has been prompted because the bottle and paper banks are no longer being used because of the popularity of its kerbside collection scheme. Under that scheme, homes are given their own recycling bins which are collected on alternate weeks. The council said it will be keeping 10 recycling banks at supermarkets in the city because they are well used.... more >>>

PUBLIC TOILETS TO CLOSE
Public ToiletsNearly a third of Derby's public toilets have been earmarked for closure by the city council. Councillor Joe Naitta, the councillor responsible for leisure and culture in Derby, is proposing to shut 10 of the city's 31 public toilets because, he says, there is not enough money in the budget to make them "fit for purpose". And he said they had become outdated and in some cases, havens for drug users and criminals. Toilets on the hit list include those at the Eagle Market, Markeaton Park Island, the Assembly Rooms and The Spot.... more >>>

BusesTrent Barton has become the UK's first to feature free onboard wireless internet. The company's Red Arrow service, which runs between Derby, Nottingham and Chesterfield, has undergone a £70,000 refurbishment, upgrading eight buses with full wi-fi, leather seats and two four-seater work tables. Adrian Cadd, manager for Trent Barton, said, "We are the first service to feature a wireless service and we fully expect other companies across the country to follow our lead. FINE AND CRIMINAL RECORD FOR LEAVING BINS OUT
Wheelie BinsHomeowners are set to receive a £5,000 fine and a criminal record if they leave their bins out too long. The new rule will see new council-employed bin wardens patrol the streets and dish out £100 fixed penalty notices and if residents don’t pay in two weeks, they could be dragged to court, branded with a criminal record and fined up to £5,000. That’s more than many crooks have to pay for drink-driving. And the 14 day timeframe could be a nasty surprise if you’re on holiday when the fine is served.... more >>>
CABBIES PLAN CHEAP FARES INTO CITY
TaxisTaxi drivers angry at new late-night bus services are planning to try to steal back business by offering rides into the city centre for £1. The city council said that in order to carry out the promotion, 10% of the city's drivers had to request permission.... more >>>
